Course Reserve: A Service for UAB Faculty and Students

What is Course Reserve?

Course Reserve allows each teacher to set aside books and photocopies for students enrolled in his or her courses. The materials are kept on the "Course Reserve shelf" at the library Circulation Desk. A student presenting a current student I.D. may borrow the materials for a short time.

How can UAB faculty benefit from Course Reserve?

As a member of the UAB faculty, you may request that materials be placed on Course Reserve. You may reserve items belonging either to you or to the Library's circulating collection ("circulating collection" refers to items that can be checked out).

Electronic items may also be placed on Course Reserve. These may be items that you give us, or that belong to the Library's collection of electronic resources.

To reserve items that belong to you, please follow these steps:

  • Fill out and print this request form, or call 934-4338 to obtain a copy from the Library.
  • Take the completed form to the Library Circulation Desk, along with the items you want to reserve. The Library staff will place the items on the Course Reserve shelf for you.

To reserve items in electronic format or in the Library's circulating collection:

Please note the following policies:

  • Course reserve requests will be processed as quickly as possible. Please allow at least five working days for the library to pull the materials and input all data to the online Circulation System and Catalog.
  • Please submit any changes through e-mail to the Reserve Coordinator.
  • Sterne Library attempts to observe all copyright restrictions. Please provide the Library with any photocopies you wish to place on reserve for your course.
  • Non-circulating materials belonging to the Library, including reference books and periodicals, and any items obtained through Interlibrary Loan, cannot be placed on reserve. If you wish, you may photocopy these materials and place the photocopies on reserve.
Thank you for your cooperation!

How can UAB students benefit from Course Reserve?

As a UAB student, you may borrow books and articles placed on Course Reserve for your class. A current student I.D. is required, along with the call number for each item you wish to borrow.

Some items are online; you can access them from any computer, anywhere, using your BlazerID and password.
