Google Scholar Quick Start (scholar.google.com)

What is Google Scholar?

Google Scholar indexes and provides a search engine for scholarly literature across disciplines. Documents include "articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites."

Does Google Scholar cover ALL published books and articles?

No. Google receives permission from publishers to crawl and index journal articles on their sites. Not all publishers participate. Google Scholar also indexes open scholarly resources from academic and professional institutions and organizations. The books indexed are either citations-only or those scanned in Google Books.

Can I read the full text of ALL books and articles retrieved in a Google Scholar search?

No. Google Scholar covers a combination of freely available sources and sources requiring one-time payment or subscription. UAB students, faculty, and staff have online access to many of the articles indexed by Google Scholar because the UAB libraries subscribe to databases and electronic journals in which the articles are available.

What are the uses and limitations of Google Scholar?

Use Google Scholar to
  • search scholarly publications across disciplines.
  • search the full text of multiple types of publications.
  • identify publications that cite a specific article (Cited by link).
  • verify citations or locate information for incomplete citations.
  • [your use here].

The Google Scholar Help page has tips for searching and understanding results.

Google Scholar does not cover all scholarly publications. Comprehensive research should include library catalogs and databases. Contact a librarian if you have questions about database searching or need assistance with developing a research strategy.

How do I set up Google Scholar to connect to full text of articles available through UAB libraries?

  1. Choose the Settings icon (Google Settings) from the upper right corner of the Google Scholar home page.
  2. Choose Library links from the left column of the next page.
  3. Enter university alabama birmingham in the box on the Library links page and choose the Find Library button.
  4. Check the box for University of Alabama at Birmingham – Find It @ UAB Sterne Lib. You can also check the box for Find It @ UAB Lister Hill.
  5. Choose Save from the top or middle of the page.
  6. When you search Google Scholar, Find It @ UAB Sterne Lib. appears to the right of search results available in UAB databases. Choose the Find It @ UAB link to connect to full text of articles in the databases and electronic journals available through UAB Libraries.

For articles not available online, search by Journal Title in the online catalogs at Sterne Library or Lister Hill Library. The articles you need might be available in the print collections of these libraries.

How do I locate books included in Google Scholar?

Choose the Library Search link which appears under the citations for books. This searches library holdings in WorldCat.org, including holdings for Sterne Library.

If you don't see the Library Search option under the books listed in your Google Scholar search results, complete the following steps:

  1. Choose the Settings icon Google Settings from the upper right corner of the Google Scholar home page.
  2. Choose Library links from the left column of the next page.
  3. Enter worldcat in the box on the Library links page and choose the Find Library button.
  4. Check the box for Open WorldCat - Library Search.
  5. Choose Save from the top or middle of the page.
Google WorldCat Settings

Some books indexed in Google Scholar are from Google Books. The titles of these books are hyperlinked and labeled books.google.com. Some of the Google Books titles have limited previews available or full text available (usually books in the public domain).

Other books indexed in Google Scholar show citations only. Use the Library Search link under these titles to identify library holdings (including those of Sterne Library) in your area.
