The Reference Department assists patrons with identifying, locating, and using resources available both within and outside of Sterne Library. In addition to helping patrons find information, the Reference Department provides a variety of services such as library instruction, interlibrary loan, and online database searching. You may contact the reference staff in person at the Reference/Information Desk on the first floor of Sterne Library or by telephone at 934-6364. Ms. Linda S. Harris is the Head of Reference.
Reference assistance is available to all patrons. The reference
staff assists users by answering general and directional questions,
providing instruction on how to use Sterne Library's online information
system (SCOTTY), and helping find information for research papers and projects.
Bibliographies and other guides on using Sterne Library's resources are available at the Reference/Information Desk. Several of these guides are course-specific and available on the Sterne Library home page under research guides.
Many of Sterne Library's reference librarians specialize in
areas related to UAB's school structure (Arts & Humanities,
Business, Education, Engineering, Natural Sciences &
Mathematics, and Social & Behavioral
Sciences). Sterne Library also has an Instruction and Outreach librarian and two General Reference
librarians. Patrons may be referred to the subject specialists
for assistance with advanced research questions. Patrons may also contact
the subject specialists directly for individual research assistance.
Library instruction is designed to help patrons become more familiar with Sterne Library and master the wide range of print and electronic sources available. The library offers research consultationss, citation consultations, and course-related instruction. If you are from an area school and would like to bring your class to the library, please review Instruction to Area Schools.
UAB faculty, students, and staff can use Interlibrary Loan to request materials not owned by Sterne Library or by Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences.
All reference librarians select items to be added to the collection in support of UAB's academic, research, and service programs. To recommend an item for purchase, please contact the appropriate reference librarian or complete an electronic form. All requests will be reviewed by a reference librarian who will decide whether or not to acquire the item.
