Mervyn H. Sterne Library is named for the late Birmingham businessman and civic leader, Mervyn Hayden Sterne (1892 - 1973).

Welcome to the Virtual Tour of Mervyn H. Sterne Library at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

When UAB was formed in 1969, it included a small extension library. From that beginning, Sterne Library emerged and has developed over the years into a major academic library. From 1969 until 1973, the library was housed in several locations. Sterne Library opened for service in January 1973 at its present location, 917 13th Street South, next to the Education Building. Expanded in 1987, the Library now houses a collection of over one million items. The collections support teaching and research across campus. In addition to print books, the collection contains e-books, full-text databases, periodicals, DVDs, software, seating, and computers. The Mervyn H. Sterne building serves the University community; this includes not only the students, faculty, and staff of UAB, but all of Birmingham.
