 Business Research Certificate

Winner of the Springshare Innovation in Academic Libraries Award, the program consists of eight fifty-minute sessions. Each session includes demonstrations of Sterne Library databases, print materials and reputable web sites, as well as effective search strategies and tips. You will also have the chance for hands-on research practice each week and multiple chances to win Starbucks gift cards and Sterne Library travel mugs.

 DH 101: Introduction to Digital Humanities

Expand your knowledge of digital humanities beyond computing + humanities.

Workshop participants will:

  • gain a working definition of digital humanities;
  • learn about digital tools used in humanities teaching, research, and scholarship;
  • examine digital humanities projects in their disciplines;
  • identify digital humanities practitioners and projects at UAB;
  • take away resources for additional information and connecting with other scholars.

Learn how to use EndNote to collect references from library catalogs and databases, organize and share references, find and attach full text, generate bibliographies in specific citation styles, and insert references into papers using Microsoft Word.

 Google Scholar

Although faculty and students often begin research by using Google, many are not aware of using Google Scholar to focus search results on scholarly sources. This workshop covers the basics of using Google Scholar to research topics across disciplines, conduct cited reference searching, and locate legal opinions. Participants will learn the benefits and limitations of the site as well as how to change Google Scholar settings to access the full text of articles available through UAB libraries.

 Library Research Skills Refresher

Are you returning to the academic environment after years or decades away? Are you a little intimidated by the changes and advances that have occurred in college libraries? Or, do you simply need to refresh your library skills?

This workshop will guide students in the navigation of the library, both the physical space and the Library website; the discovery and use of the print, audiovisual, and electronic resources; and the attainment of basic research skills.

The purpose of this program is to introduce students to education-specific resources, provide hands-on practice with these resources, and instill important information literacy skills. Resources covered will include books, periodicals, databases, and websites relevant to the practice of teaching, the development of the professional identity, and the research of concepts and trends in the field of education.

These seven sessions will introduce students to social sciences-specific resources including library databases, print materials, and reputable websites. Students will build information literacy skills important for their success at UAB and during their professional careers. Students earn a certificate by attending five or more sessions.

 Zotero

Learn how to use Zotero to collect references from library catalogs and databases and websites, organize and share references, insert references into papers using Microsoft Word, and generate bibliographies and reference lists in various popular citation styles (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.).

If you wish to bring your own laptop, you must install Zotero and its Microsoft Word plugin in advance. Zotero is available to run as extension-only for Firefox. The workshop will be taught on the basis of the Firefox version. To use Zotero with Chrome or Safari, you must install the Zotero Standalone program and the Chrome or Safari connector. (Zotero Standalone will also work with the Firefox browser extension.) The Zotero Standalone and the connectors can be downloaded here. The Word plugin (for Windows and Mac) can be found here.
